Debate y reacción a las reformas ilustradas: maniobras legales de las cofradías a finales del siglo XVIII

Abstract

Tras las leyes contra las cofradías españolas dictadas en tiempos de Carlos III, el futuro de esas asociaciones de laicos se presentaba muy incierto. Parecía que todo estaba perdido. Pero no fue así. Las cofradías encontraron los resquicios que la ley dejaba para lograr su supervivencia. Lo hicieron por vías diversas, como la agregación a cofradías aceptadas (las sacramentales), el recurso a la protección real, la apelación a la devoción del pueblo o la promoción de útiles obras de caridad.

After the laws against the spanish brotherhoods promulgated in the reign of Charles III, the future of these associations of laymen was very uncertain. It seemed the end of the confraternities. But it wasn’t so. The brotherhoods found the loopholes for getting their survival. They got it through several ways like the joining to others recognized confraternities (such as in honour of the Blessed Sacrament), the resort to the royal protection, the appeal to the popular piety or the promotion of some good works.
