Del exilio al terruño. Las reclamaciones ante la Justicia de los judíos que regresaron bautizados (1492-1525)

Abstract

Un edicto de 1492 ordenaba a todos los judíos abandonar los reinos hispánicos. Estas pági- nas se ocupan de aquellos que, habiendo emprendido en un primer momento el camino del exilio, decidieron convertirse para que les fuera permitido regresar a su tierra. A través de procesos judiciales se analiza ese retorno pero atendiendo, de un modo especial, a aquellos aspectos relativos a la administración de justicia y a la dinámica del poder político en la Castilla bajomedieval. Se trata de pleitos entablados con el fin de recuperar la vivienda que se habían visto obligados a dejar o a malvender en el contexto de la expulsión. Los litigios ponen en evidencia la confusión reinante y los abusos cometidos contra quienes estaban prestos a partir, a la vez que permiten apreciar la actuación de los agentes ante la justicia y su desenvolvimiento en la trama jurisdiccional.

The Edict of 1492 ordered all Jews to leave the Hispanic kingdoms. These pages address those that at first took the road of exile and then decided to convert so that they would be allowed to return to their homeland. This return is analyzed through the study of judicial processes, in particular, the aspects that relate to the administration of justice and the dynamics of political power in late medieval Castile. We focus on processes that were started to recuperate the housing that they had to abandon or sell at a loss during the process of expulsion. These lawsuits demonstrate the prevailing confusion and abuses committed against those that were ready to leave; at the same time they allow us to see how the agents are faced with the justice and their development in the jurisdictional network.
