We tackle the question of the definition and the oneness of the human being. After manifesting the double consciousness on which the notion of man depends, we deal with the humanistic affirmation of the unity of human being, showing the opposites of this affirmation (the separation of man from nature and ignorance concerning the biological unity of the Homo species). We also deal with several attacks perpetrated against humanism during the XXth century which question the oneness of the human being. We find it impossible to base the oneness of man on the margin of his biological nature. In order to achieve this we have to start moving away from the disjunctive paradigm typical in modern western thought, a paradigm which defines diversity excluding unity and viceversa, making them opposite. There is an urgent need for a paradigm that is able to link, in a complex and non-reductionist way, the biological and the cultural sides of the human being, integrating the biological dimension, in order to resolve the idealist vacuity of humanism. Biology doesn't reveal, as racist idealogies have mistakenly supposed, the existence of hierarchical differences, but rather the unity of the Homo species, while at the same time verifying the diversity of individuals typical of our species. The concept of man has a doubly irreducible input: the natural and the cultural. The human is a bio-cultural being. Every human feature has a biological source, and every human act is wholly culturized. The bio-cultural definition of man must be the Gordian Knot of the new anthropology.en
