The relationship between physical activity (PA), cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and
academic achievement in young people is unclear. The aim of this study was to analyze the
relationship between PA, CRF and academic achievement in 152 children according to sex (average
age of 8.6 ± 0.3 years) in southern Spain. A tri-axial accelerometer was used to measure PA; the 20-m
Shuttle Run Test was performed to assess the CRF; and to know the academic achievement, the official
school records were considered. The results showed a weak correlation between moderate PA and
moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) with CRF in boys (all, 0.2 > r < 0.4; p < 0.05), whereas the vigorous
PA showed a moderate and weak correlation with CRF (all, p < 0.05), in both boys (r = 0.537) and girls
(r = 0.382), respectively. In addition, a weak inverse correlation between moderate PA and MVPA
with academic achievement showed in girls (all, 0.2 > r < 0.4; p < 0.05). Finally, the CRF weakly
correlated with academic achievement only in boys (all, 0.2 > r < 0.4; p < 0.05). Our study showed
a relationship between PA and CRF in both sexes. Nonetheless, the PA was inversely related to
academic achievement in girls, whereas the CRF was related to academic achievement in boys.

Agreement between the spatiotemporal gait parameters from two different wearable devices and high-speed video analysis
García-Pinillos, Felipe; Pantoja Vallejo, Antonio
This study aimed to evaluate the concurrent validity of two different inertial measurement
units for measuring spatiotemporal parameters during running on a treadmill, by comparing
data with a high-speed video analysis (VA) at 1,000 Hz. Forty-nine endurance runners performed a running protocol on a treadmill at comfortable velocity (i.e., 3.25 ± 0.36 m.s-1).
Those wearable devices (i.e., Stryd™ and RunScribe™ systems) were compared to a highspeed VA, as a reference system for measuring spatiotemporal parameters (i.e. contact
time [CT], flight time [FT], step frequency [SF] and step length [SL]) during running at comfortable velocity. The pairwise comparison revealed that the Stryd™ system underestimated
CT (5.2%, p < 0.001) and overestimated FT (15.1%, p < 0.001) compared to the VA;
whereas the RunScribe™ system underestimated CT (2.3%, p = 0.009). No significant differences were observed in SF and SL between the wearable devices and VA. The intra
class correlation coefficient (ICC) revealed an almost perfect association between both systems and high-speed VA (ICC > 0.81). The Bland-Altman plots revealed heteroscedasticity
of error (r
2 = 0.166) for the CT from the Stryd™ system, whereas no heteroscedasticity of
error (r
2 < 0.1) was revealed in the rest of parameters. In conclusion, the results obtained
suggest that both foot pods are valid tools for measuring spatiotemporal parameters during
running on a treadmill at comfortable velocity. If the limits of agreement of both systems are
considered in respect to high-speed VA, the RunScribe™ seems to be a more accurate system for measuring temporal parameters and SL than the Stryd™ system.

Background: The regular practice of physical activity contributes to weight control and improves maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), socialization and quality of life. Aim: To determine the effect of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity on body composition and VO2max in a group of overweight school-age males. Material and Methods: We studied fifty-five overweight males aged 15.6 ± 0.7 years. Participants were divided in two groups (experimental and control groups). The intervention in the experimental group was the practice of small-sided games during 60 minutes, two days per week and during 11 weeks. At baseline and the end of the intervention, body composition was measured using bioimpedance and VO2max was calculated using the Course Navette test. Results: A 7% reduction in the percentage of body fat and a 9% increase in VO2max were observed in the experimental group (p < 0.01). No changes were recorded in the control group. Conclusions: Eleven weeks of small-sided exercises performed twice per week increased VO2max and reduced fat mass in overweight adolescents.

Se propone incrementar el tiempo de intervención y aplicar diferentes programas para observar el impacto del tipo de actividad en futuras investigaciones.; The aim of this study was to analyse the effects of a physical activity program, eight-week and based on small sided games, on some variables associated to executive function construct. The participants in the study were 54 adolescents, who were physically inactive, from the city of Priego (Córdoba, Spain), whose age ranged between 15 and 16 years old (M=15.35; SD= .48). The study was based on a quasi-experimental pre-post design with two randomized groups, control and experimental. The instruments used to evaluate the cognitive skills were Digits and Letters and Numbers tests of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-IV), the Trail Making Test (A and B) and the Stroop Test. It was realized an analysis of the mixed variance 2x2 to determine the effects of the treatment. Results showed positive effects of the physical activity program in subtest of WISC-IV and Trail Making Test B, although the effect size was weak. It is proposed to increase the time of intervention and apply different treatments to observe the impact of type of activity for future research.

This article analyses the effects of a physical activity session on mood states in a group of adolescents from the city of Malaga (Spain). Participants of this study were 67 individuals aged between 14 and 17 years (M=14.93; SD= .99). Mood states in the sample were evaluated using the Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire (McNair, Lorr, & Droppleman, 1971) and analysing the following factors: tension-anxiety, depression-dejection, anger-hostility, vigour-activity, fatigue-inertia, and confusion-bewilderment. Results indicated that, after the physical activity session, there was a significant decrease in the depression, anxiety and confusion scores, and an increase in vigour. The changes were similar for both sexes, although the state of tension improved only for boys, and vigour increased to a greater extent in girls.
