The tree has been a constant feature in the structure and sustainability of agrarian landscapes in Mediterranean mountain regions. Our research focuses on trees that grow outside forests, important resources which due to their heterogeneity and multi-functionality have been studied from a variety of methodological perspectives without a clear integrated vision. In this context we have used the concept of ‘Trees Outside Forest’ (TOF) and the standardized methodological and assessment criteria proposed by the FAO in the Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) as a benchmark for our research, which deals above all with the current situation of the TOF in Mediterranean mountain regions. To this end, and always from a landscape perspective, we have carried out a diachronic analysis and an integrated assessment of the multi-functionality of these resources within the agricultural system of the Mediterranean mountainside, exemplified in the coastal massif of the Contraviesa in southern Spain.

The LEADER initiative has had an undeniable impact on shaping rural
development policies across broad areas of Spain. Ever since its launch in 1991, it
has been one of the most successful pillars of development intervention in rural areas,
especially in more deprived parts of the country such as Andalusia and Extremadura.
In this chapter we make a comparative analysis of the programme’s impact over the
period 2007–2013, and analyse the levels of investment and of public funding in the
different projects and measures. We also assess their spatial distribution in order to
draw conclusions as regards the effects of LEADER on each region.

Territorially unequal rural development: the cases of the LEADER Initiative and the PRODER Programme in Andalusia (Spain)Cañete Pérez, José AntonioCejudo García, EugenioNavarro Valverde, Francisco Antoniohttps://hdl.handle.net/10481/876012024-01-30T10:29:44ZTerritorially unequal rural development: the cases of the LEADER Initiative and the PRODER Programme in Andalusia (Spain)

This paper studies the territorial effects of the LEADER approach in Southern Europe, by analysing the region of Andalusia (Spain). Our research has revealed that, in many cases, projects were concentrated in the most dynamic, most populated areas, with a well-established business network with the financial and organizational capacity required to access European funding. In these areas, the economic leadership of the most dynamic municipalities has been reinforced at the expense of more depressed areas with little social capital and few businesses. These programmes have not, therefore, helped to mitigate territorial imbalances. In a minority of rural areas, however, this trend was not observed, which shows that although territorial inequality is a widespread problem in the practice of neo-endogenous rural development, it does not affect all areas to the same degree.
