El autor realiza diferentes preguntas a Apel en las que se ven confrontados, en tensión, la dimensión existencial del mundo de la vida y la corporalidad, por un lado, y la dimensión ideal regulativa (racionalidad ideal pura), por otro. Luis Sáez parte del supuesto de que si la tensión entre facticidad e idealidad no se mantiene, entonces el progreso pensado por Apel constituiría una racionalización de la vida en la que las diferentes dimensiones de la existencia estarían destinadas a ser subsumidas en el juicio reflexivo y argumentativo.
